General notes
The air-conditioning system is only operational when the engine is running. Optimum operation is only achieved when you drive with the windows and the panorama louvred sliding sunroof* closed.
 | |
Ventilate the vehicle for a brief period during warm weather, e.g. using the Summer opening feature more. This helps you to achieve the desired interior temperature more quickly.
The integrated filter filters out most particles of dust and completely filters out pollen.
 | |
The interval for replacing the filter depends on environmental influences such as heavy air pollution. The interval may be shorter than that indicated in the Service Booklet. A clogged filter reduces the amount of air supplied to the vehicle interior.
 | Risk of accident |
Follow the settings recommended on the following pages for heating or cooling. The windows could otherwise mist up. This may prevent you from observing the traffic conditions, thereby causing an accident.
Switching the air conditioning system on/off
Windows misted up on the inside
Activate the demisting function more.
Windscreen misted up on the outside
 | |
You should only select this setting until the windscreen is clear again.
Setting the temperature
You can set the temperature for the entire vehicle.
To increase or reduce the temperature: turn thumbwheel to the right or left. Only change the temperature settings in small increments. Start at 22 °C.
Setting the air distribution manually
You can set the air distribution for the entire vehicle.
The symbols for the air distribution have the following meanings:
Symbol
Meaning
Directs the airflow through the demister vents to the windscreen and side windows

Directs the airflow to the entire vehicle interior
Directs air into the front and rear footwells and reduces airflow through the centre and side air vents
Directs the airflow through the centre and side air vents
To set the air distribution: turn thumbwheel to the desired position. The thumbwheel can also be turned to the area between two positions.
 | |
To prevent the windscreen from misting up, set the air distribution to the position before parking the vehicle. You can switch the air distribution thumbwheels to the desired position again once you restart the engine.
Setting the airflow manually
You can set the airflow manually for the entire vehicle.
To increase/reduce the airflow: turn thumbwheel to the right or left.
Demisting
 | |
You should only select the demisting function until the windscreen is clear again.
 | |
Do not make any other settings when the demisting function is activated.
You can use the following settings to demist the windscreen, e.g. when it is covered with frost.
To switch off: turn the temperature, airflow and air distribution thumbwheels to the appropriate positions.
| |
Cooling with air dehumidification remains active.

You should only select this setting until the windscreen is clear again.
Air-recirculation mode
You can deactivate the flow of fresh air if unpleasant odours are entering the vehicle from outside. No more fresh air will be taken in and the air inside the vehicle will be recirculated.
 | Risk of accident |
Only switch over to air-recirculation mode briefly if the outside temperature is low. Otherwise, the windows could mist up, thus impairing visibility and endangering yourself and others. This may prevent you from observing the traffic conditions, thereby causing an accident.
To activate: press the button.
| |
The indicator lamp in the button lights up.
 | |
Air-recirculation mode is activated automatically at high outside temperatures. When air-recirculation mode is activated automatically, the indicator lamp in the button is not lit.
Outside air is added after about 30 minutes.
To deactivate: press the button.
| |
The indicator lamp in the button goes out.
 | |
-
after approximately 5 minutes at outside temperatures below approximately 7 °C
-
after approximately 5 minutes if the cooling with dehumidification function is deactivated
-
after approximately 30 minutes at outside temperatures above approximately 7 °C

Air-recirculation mode with the Convenience opening/closing feature
 | Risk of injury |
Make sure that nobody can become trapped between the side window and the door frame as the side windows are opened and closed. Do not place objects or lean against the side window when it is being opened or closed. You or the objects could be drawn in or become trapped between the side window and the door frame as the window moves. If there is a risk of entrapment, release the button. If necessary, press the switch to stop, open or close the side window in the opposite direction.
Make sure that nobody can become trapped as the panorama louvred sliding sunroof* is opened and closed. If there is a risk of entrapment, release the button. If necessary, press the switch to stop, open or close the panorama louvred sliding sunroof* in the opposite direction.
Convenience closing: press and hold the button for longer than two seconds and continue holding it until the side windows and the panorama louvered sliding sunroof* are closed.
| |
The indicator lamp in the button lights up. Air-recirculation mode is activated.
Summer opening: press and hold the button for longer than two seconds and continue holding it until the side windows have returned to their previous position.
| |
The indicator lamp in the button goes out. Air-recirculation mode is deactivated. The panorama louvred sliding sunroof* moves to the ventilation position.
 | |
If you open a side window manually after using the Convenience closing feature, the window will remain in this position when opened using the Convenience opening feature.
Cooling with air-dehumidification
 | Risk of accident |
If you turn off cooling with dehumidification, the vehicle will not be cooled or dehumidified during warmer weather conditions. The windows could mist up more quickly. This may prevent you from observing the traffic conditions, thereby causing an accident.
 | Environmental note |
The cooling system uses the refrigerant R134A. This refrigerant does not damage the earth's ozone layer.
 | |
Condensation may drip from the underside of the vehicle when Thermatic is in cooling mode.
The cooling function is operational when the engine is running and cools according to the interior temperature selected. The cooling also dries the air inside the vehicle and thereby efficiently prevents the windows from misting up.
To deactivate: press the button.
| |
The indicator lamp in the button goes out. The cooling with air dehumidification has a delayed switch-off feature.
To activate: press the button.
