General notes

Thermatic is only operational when the engine is running. Optimum operation is only achieved when you are driving with the windows and sliding/tilting sunroof* closed.

You can allow the air-conditioning system to adjust automatically or you can adjust it manually.

In automatic mode, Thermatic cools or heats the vehicle interior according to:

  • the selected temperature

  • the outside temperature

  • the intensity of sunlight

Ventilate the vehicle for a brief period during warm weather. This helps you to achieve the desired interior temperature more quickly.

The integrated filter largely filters out particles of dust and completely filters out pollen.

The interval for replacing the filter depends on environmental influences such as heavy air pollution. The interval may be shorter than that indicated in the Service Booklet. A clogged filter reduces the amount of air supplied to the vehicle interior.

Risk of accident

Follow the settings recommended on the following pages for heating or cooling. The windows could otherwise mist up. This may prevent you from observing the traffic conditions, thereby causing an accident.

Activating and deactivating Thermatic

To deactivate: turn airflow thumbwheel to 0.

Select this setting when you are driving with windows or the sliding/tilting sunroof* open, for example. When Thermatic is deactivated, the air supply and air circulation are also switched off. Only select this setting briefly when the windows and the sliding/tilting sunroof* are closed, otherwise the windows may mist up.

Make sure that the key is in position 2 in the ignition lock.

To activate: turn airflow thumbwheel  to the right.

The previously selected settings come into effect again.

Controlling the air conditioning automatically

If you switch the air conditioning to automatic mode, you will only rarely need to adjust the temperature, airflow or air distribution. The cooling with air dehumidification function is switched on in automatic mode. If necessary, cooling with dehumidification can be deactivated.

Make sure that the key is in position 2 in the ignition lock.

To activate: press the  button.

The indicator lamp in the button comes on. Airflow and air distribution are controlled automatically.

To deactivate: press the  button.

The indicator lamp in the button goes out. Automatic air distribution and airflow are deactivated.

Set the desired airflow.

Set the desired air distribution.

Setting the temperature

Different temperatures for the driver's and front-passenger side can be set.

To increase/reduce the temperature: turn thumbwheels and to the right or left. Only change the temperature settings in small increments. Start at 22 °C.

If you turn the temperature thumbwheel on one side of the vehicle fully to the right or left, you will increase or reduce the temperature on the other side of the vehicle at the same time.

Setting the air distribution manually

You can also set the air distribution manually for the entire vehicle.

The symbols for the air distribution have the following meanings:

Symbol

Meaning

Directs air through the demister vents to the windscreen and side windows

Directs air to the entire vehicle interior

Directs air to the footwell and through the side air vents

Directs air through the centre, side and dashboard air vents

To set the air distribution: turn thumbwheel to the appropriate symbol. The thumbwheel can also be turned to the area between two symbols.

Setting the airflow manually

You can also set the airflow manually for the entire vehicle.

To increase/reduce the airflow: turn thumbwheel to the right or left.

Demisting the windscreen

You should only select the demisting function until the windscreen is clear again.

Do not make any other settings when the demisting function is activated.

You can use the following settings to demist the windscreen, e.g. when it is covered with frost.

To switch on: press the  button.

The indicator lamp in the button comes on.

  • Cooling with air dehumidification on

  • High airflow

  • High temperature

  • Air distribution to the windscreen and front side windows

  • Air-recirculation mode off

To deactivate: press the  button.

The indicator lamp in the button goes out. The previously selected settings come into effect again. The cooling with air-dehumidification function remains on. Air-recirculation mode remains deactivated.

or

Press the button.

The indicator lamp in the button goes out. The indicator lamp in the button comes on. Airflow and air distribution are controlled automatically.

Windows misted up

Windows misted up on the inside

You can use the following settings to demist the windscreen, e.g. when it is covered with frost.

Activate the automatic mode more.

If the windows are still misted up:

Activate the demisting function more.

You should only select the demisting function until the windscreen is clear again.

Do not make any other settings when the demisting function is activated.

Windscreen misted up on the outside

Switch on the windscreen wipers.

Close the centre air vents.

Turn the air distribution thumbwheel to the or symbol.

You should only select this setting until the windscreen is clear again.

Air-recirculation mode

You can deactivate the flow of fresh air if unpleasant smells are entering the vehicle from outside. No more fresh air will be taken in and the air inside the vehicle will be recirculated.

Risk of accident

Only switch over to air-recirculation mode briefly at low outside temperatures. Otherwise, the windows could mist up, thus impairing visibility and endangering yourself and others. This may prevent you from observing the traffic conditions, thereby causing an accident.

To activate: briefly press the button.

The indicator lamp in the button comes on.

Air-recirculation mode is activated automatically at high outside temperatures. When air-recirculation mode is activated automatically, the indicator lamp in the button is off.

Outside air is added after about 30 minutes.

To deactivate: press the  button.

The indicator lamp in the button goes out.

Air-recirculation mode switches off automatically:

  • after approximately five minutes at outside temperatures below approximately 5 °C

  • after approximately five minutes if the cooling with air dehumidification function is deactivated

  • after approximately 30 minutes at outside temperatures above approximately 5 °C

Air-recirculation mode with the convenience opening/closing feature

Risk of injury

Make sure that nobody can become trapped between the side window and the door frame as the side windows are opened and closed. Do not place objects or lean against the side window when it is being opened or closed. You or the objects could be drawn in or become trapped between the side window and the door frame as the window moves. If danger threatens, release the button or operate the switch to move the side window in the opposite direction, to stop the side window or to open or close it again.

Make sure that nobody can become trapped when you are closing the sliding/tilting sunroof*. If danger threatens, release the button or press the switch to open the sliding/tilting sunroof*.

Residual heat/auxiliary ventilation

It is possible to make use of the residual heat of the engine to continue heating the stationary vehicle for up to 30 minutes after the engine has been switched off. The heating time depends on the coolant temperature and on the interior temperature that has been set.

If you activate residual heat

(Not available in all countries.)

at high temperatures, only ventilation will be activated.

The blower will run at a low speed regardless of the airflow setting.

Make sure the key is in position 0 in the ignition lock or has been removed.

To activate: press the  button.

The indicator lamp in the button comes on.

To deactivate: press the  button.

The indicator lamp in the button goes out.

The residual heat/auxiliary ventilation is automatically deactivated after about 30 minutes, or when:

  • the ignition is switched on

  • the battery voltage drops

  • the coolant temperature is too low

Cooling with air dehumidification

Risk of accident

If you deactivate the cooling function with air dehumidification, the vehicle will not be cooled in warm weather and the air will not be dehumidified. The windows could mist up more quickly. This may prevent you from observing the traffic conditions, thereby causing an accident.

Environmental note

The cooling system uses the refrigerant R134A. This refrigerant does not damage the earth's ozone layer.

Condensation may drip from the underside of the vehicle when Thermatic is in cooling mode.

The cooling function is operational when the engine is running and cools according to the interior temperature selected. The cooling also dries the air inside the vehicle and thereby effectively prevents the windows from misting up.

To deactivate: press the  button.

The indicator lamp in the button goes out. The cooling function with air dehumidification has a delayed switch-off feature.

To switch on: press the  button.

The indicator lamp in the button lights up. The cooling with air-dehumidification function is activated.

Rear-compartment air conditioning

You can set the airflow and air direction individually using the rear vents more.

You can set the temperature and blower speed using the front control panel more.

The temperature of the air from the rear-compartment centre air vents is the same as the temperature of the air from the centre air vents on the dashboard.
