Notes on changing fuses

The fuses in your vehicle serve to close down faulty circuits. If a fuse blows, all the components on the circuit and their functions will fail.

Blown fuses must be replaced with fuses of the same rating, which you can recognise by the colour and value. The fuse ratings are listed in the fuse allocation chart. A Mercedes-Benz Service Centre will be happy to advise you.

Risk of fire

Only use fuses that have been approved for Mercedes-Benz vehicles and which have the correct amperage for the system concerned. Do not attempt to repair or bridge faulty fuses. A circuit overload could otherwise start a fire. Have the cause traced and rectified at a qualified specialist workshop, e.g. a Mercedes-Benz Service Centre.

If the newly inserted fuse also blows, have the cause traced and rectified at a qualified specialist workshop, e.g. a Mercedes-Benz Service Centre.

Only use fuses that have been approved for Mercedes-Benz vehicles and which have the correct fuse rating for the system concerned. Otherwise, components or systems could be damaged.

The fuses are located in various fuse boxes:

  • Main fuse box on the driver's side of the dashboard

  • Fuse box in the engine compartment on the left-hand side of the vehicle

  • Fuse box in the boot, on the left-hand side of the vehicle

Fuse allocation chart

The fuse allocation chart is in the main fuse box in the dashboard.

 

Before changing a fuse

  

Park the vehicle.
  

Switch off all electrical consumers.
  

Remove the key from the ignition lock.
 

Main fuse box in the dashboard

  

To open: open the driver's door.
Cover

Do not use a pointed object, such as a screwdriver, to open the fuse box in the dashboard. You could otherwise damage the dashboard.
  

Prise off cover on the recess (arrow), for example using a blunt object as a lever.
  

Pull cover outwards and remove.
  

To close: clip in cover  at the front.
  

Fold cover  inwards until it engages.
  

Close the driver's door.
 

Fuse box in the engine compartment

The fuse box is located in the engine compartment on the left when viewed in the direction of travel.

All models, except CLK 320 CDI

  

To open: open the bonnet more.
Rotary catches
Cover
Retainer
  

Turn rotary catches anti-clockwise through a quarter of a turn.
  

Raise cover at the rear, guide it sideways out of retainer and remove by pulling it forwards.
Fuse box lid
Clamps
  

Remove moisture from the fuse box using a dry cloth.
  

Fold clamps upwards.
  

Remove fuse box lid .
  

To close: check whether the rubber seal is lying correctly in lid .
  

Insert lid into the retainer at the rear of fuse box .
  

Press lid down and secure with clamps .
  

Insert cover into retainer.
  

Turn rotary catches clockwise through a quarter of a turn.
  

Close the bonnet more.

CLK 320 CDI

  

To open: open the bonnet more.

Turn rotary catches anti-clockwise through a quarter of a turn.
  

Raise cover at the rear, guide it sideways out of retainer and remove by pulling it forwards.
Fuse box lid
Screws
  

Remove moisture from the fuse box using a dry cloth.
  

Take the crank out of the Owner's Manual folder.
  

Unscrew two screws using the crank.
  

Remove fuse box lid .
  

To close: check whether the rubber seal is lying correctly in lid and that the cables are routed correctly to the fuse box.
  

Insert lid at the rear of the fuse box into the retainer.
  

Push lid down and screw in two screws using the crank.
  

Insert cover into retainer .
  

Turn rotary catches clockwise through a quarter of a turn.
  

Close the bonnet more.
 

Fuse box in the boot

The fuse box is located in the boot behind the trim on the left-hand side when viewed in the direction of travel.

  

To open: open the boot lid.

Coupé: cover

Example: Coupé

  

Remove trim .
  

Remove fuse box cover .
  

To close: put cover on the fuse box.
  

Press on trim .
  

Close the boot lid.
