Disc brakes
The prerequisite for all the various electronic active safety systems is a high-performance brake system. All Mercedes-Benz Vans are therefore equipped with a state-of-the-art dual-circuit brake system with disc brakes on all wheels.
Driving safety systems
Electronic driving safety systems ensure the attainment of a high level of active and passive safety. They include the ESP®, ABS ASR, BAS and EBD systems.
Electronic Brake Force Distribution (EBD)
Electronic Brake Force Distribution (EBD) proportions the braking force between the front and rear wheels of the van as required in order to optimise braking efficiency in all driving situations. In this way the system prevents “overbraking” of the rear wheels, which could cause the tail to break loose. At the same time EBD puts less stress on the front brakes, which reduces the risk of fading due to overheating.
Equipment packages
Optional, specialised equipment packages provide additional safety for Mercedes-Benz Vans. The TOP LOAD package includes roof rails for a weight up to 150 kg, a ladder rack with rollers and a tie-down set (available for the Vito). The CARGO package contains a wooden floor with an integrated track system, side wall anchoring track as well as straps and lugs for attaching the load (available for the Vito).
Ergonomically designed driving area
An ergonomically designed driving area is vital for a driver to maintain concentration and stay focussed and alert. Comfortable multi-adjustable seats and an adjustable steering column allow drivers to quickly and easily find their ideal seating position. The cockpit includes many design features that take the stress out of driving: a clearly designed and laid out instrument panel, glare-free instruments that are easily readable both at day and night, and easy-reach, logically structured controls.

Electronic Stability Program ESP®
ESP® improves the driver's control over the vehicle in certain critical situations – for example if there is a risk of skidding ESP® compares the vehicle's intended direction with its actual track. If there is a discrepancy between the driver's instructions and the vehicle's reactions, the system takes corrective action instantly, either by reducing the engine power or by selective actuation of one or more brakes, as required. ESP® combines the functions of the anti-lock braking system (ABS), acceleration skid control (ASR) and Brake Assist (BAS), to which it also adds a stability aid.
Note: ESP® can only act within the laws of physics. If the driver exceeds these limits, even ESP® will not be able to prevent an accident!
Electrically adjustable and heated exterior mirrors
For optimal rearward visibility, Mercedes-Benz Vans are equipped with large, low-vibration exterior mirrors. The electrically adjustable and heated versions of these mirrors can be quickly adjusted from the driving seat – an important bonus when there are frequent driver changes – and ensure a clear view to the rear in winter weather.
