Atego Online Operating Instruction

Winter operation

Winter driving

Before the onset of winter, make sure that:

  • the coolant contains sufficient antifreeze more

  • the fuel used is suitable for winter use more, more.

  • when using single-grade engine oils, changeover is carried out in good time more.

  • the windscreen washer system/headlamp cleaning system contains sufficient antifreeze more.

  • tyres with a high-grip tread pattern are fitted, where possible M+S tyres (winter tyres)

  • snow chains are carried in the vehicle.

Adapt your driving style to suit the road conditions.

Vehicles without acceleration skid control (ASR): quick changes from slippery to high grip surfaces whilst the drive wheels are spinning can result in damage to the axle differential. For this reason, avoid wheelspin of the drive wheels.

In snow, slush and on icy roads, fit snow chains to the drive wheels in good time.

Snow chains

Snow chains increase traction on roads in wintry conditions.

For vehicles of the type 1215-1223, model series 970.08 and 970.28 (see vehicle identification plate):

Snow chains may only be used on the rear axle.

Risk of accident

Driving too fast with snow chains fitted may result in the chains tearing, in injury to other road users or damage to the vehicle. Do not exceed the maximum permissible speed for operation with snow chains and observe the legal requirements in individual countries.

Mercedes-Benz recommends that you only use snow chains that have been tested and approved by Mercedes-Benz. This will help to avoid damage to the vehicle. Any Mercedes-Benz Service Centre will be happy to advise you about this.

The law requires that snow chains be removed as soon as possible once the road is clear of snow. The vehicle’s driving and braking characteristics will be adversely affected if you drive with snow chains fitted on roads clear of snow.

There may be slight deviations from the description in these Operating Instructions regarding the use of snow chains due to legal requirements in individual countries.

Observe the legal requirements in all countries concerned.
