Cleaning and care

Notes on care

Regular care helps to maintain the value of the vehicle.

Mercedes-Benz recommends that you only use care products that have been tested and approved for Mercedes-Benz. You can obtain Mercedes-Benz care products from any Mercedes-Benz Service Centre.

Risk of injury

Always keep care products sealed and out of the reach of children. Always follow the instructions for the use of the care products.

Do not use fuel as a cleaning agent. Fuels are highly flammable and constitute a health hazard.

Environmental note

Only wash your vehicle at a wash bay designed for this purpose. Dispose of empty containers and used cleaning products in an environmentally responsible manner.

If you need to wash upper parts of the vehicle, always use suitable ladders or other non-slip climbing aids.

Cleaning the interior

Seat belts

Remove stains and dirt promptly to prevent damage and the build-up of residues.

Clean the seat belts with a mild washing solution. Do not dry the seat belts in direct sunlight or at temperatures above 80 .

Do not bleach or dye the seat belts. This could impair the seat belt’s performance.

Cleaning the vehicle exterior

Risk of injury

Switch off the windscreen wipers before cleaning the outside of the windscreen. Otherwise, the windscreen wipers could move and injure you or cause you to slip off the bumper steps and injure yourself.

Scratches, corrosive deposits, corrosion and damage caused by neglect or incorrect care cannot always be completely removed. In this case, visit a qualified specialist workshop, e. g. the nearest Mercedes-Benz Service Centre.

Repair damage caused by stone chippings and remove the following immediately:

  • insect remains

  • bird droppings

  • tree resin

  • oils and grease

  • fuels

  • Tar stains

In winter, wash the vehicle more frequently in order to remove salt residue.

High-pressure cleaning

Air intake duct

Observe the minimum distance between the high-pressure nozzle and the object being cleaned. This is approximately 70 cm with circular-jet nozzles and approximately 30 cm with 25° flat-spray nozzles and pressure cleaners.

Keep the water jet moving constantly while cleaning. To avoid causing damage, do not point the water jet at:

  • air intake duct

  • door joints

  • air spring bellows

  • brake lines

  • electrical components

  • plug connectors

  • seals

Risk of accident

Do not use round-jet nozzles to clean the tyres or air spring bellows.

The pulsating water jet can cause damage to the substructure of the tyres or the air spring bellows that is not visible from the outside. This type of damage only becomes noticeable at a much later stage and can cause the tyres or air spring bellows to burst. You could lose control of the vehicle and cause an accident, injuring yourself or others. Replace damaged tyres and air spring bellows immediately.

Automatic car wash

If the vehicle is very dirty, pre-wash it before you put it through an automatic car wash.

Risk of accident

If protective wax has been sprayed onto the vehicle after the car wash, remove the wax from the windscreen and the wiper blade rubbers to avoid smearing. Smearing impairs vision, which is exacerbated in poor visibility conditions (e. g. dazzling light, fog, darkness, snow flurries). As a result, you may fail to recognise dangers in time, and could cause an accident.

Fold in the exterior mirrors before driving through an automatic car wash and make sure that the windscreen wiper switch is in the position. The exterior mirrors and windscreen wipers could otherwise be damaged.

Make sure that the exterior mirrors are fully folded out again when you leave the automatic car wash.

Engine cleaning

Water must never enter the air intake and ventilation openings.

When using high-pressure or steam cleaners, do not point the spray directly at electrical components and electric cables.

Preserve the engine after it has been washed. Protect the belt drive system from the preservative agent when doing so.

Vehicles with a natural gas engine: do not direct the water jet at components of the high voltage ignition system.

Retarder

Clean the retarder (eddy current brake) regularly with a high-pressure cleaner but without any cleaning agent. Make sure that the retarder is cold. Be especially careful when cleaning electrical components and electrical connections.

Light-alloy wheels

Clean light-alloy wheels regularly. Do not use any acidic or alkaline cleaners. They may corrode the wheel bolts (wheel nuts) or the balance weight retainer springs.

After driving off-road or on construction sites

Risk of accident and injury

Contamination and dirt on the vehicle jeopardise the road safety and operational reliability of the vehicle.

In particular, the following hazards may occur:

Stone impact. Stones trapped between the tyres may be thrown up while driving. Other road users may be injured or vehicles (in particular the windscreen) could be damaged.

Risk of skidding. Dirt and mud on the tyres/on the road surface reduce road grip. This is especially the case on wet road surfaces. This could cause your vehicle to start to skid.

Risk of injury. Dirt and mud on access steps and entrances lead to reduced foothold. This could cause you to lose your footing and thereby injure yourself.

For this reason, you should always clean your vehicle carefully after driving on rough terrain or building sites before you use the vehicle on public roads again. Should you use a high-pressure cleaner or a washing facility for this, make sure you observe the relevant safety advice in this section.

The following vehicle parts in particular must be cleaned:

  • lights

  • windows

  • exterior mirrors

  • access steps and entrances

  • grab handles

  • wheels, tyres and wheel arches/mudguards

  • steering, axles, brakes

  • suspension elements and chassis frame

  • licence plates

  • radiator, engine, transmission and transmission oil cooler.

Only direct the compressed air, steam or water jets vertically onto the surface of the radiators. Avoid damaging the radiator fins. The radiator fins must not be allowed to become dirty. Damaged or dirty radiator fins can cause engine overheating.

Check the cooling and heating system regularly for leaks. If large quantities of coolant are lost or damage occurs, have the cause rectified at an authorised specialist workshop or a Mercedes-Benz Service Centre.

Remove any trapped foreign objects, e.g. stones.

After driving on mud, sand, water or under similar conditions:

Clean brake discs, brake linings, wheels and axle joints and check for damage.

If necessary, lubricate the axle joints (observe the information in the Maintenance Booklet).

Test the brakes.

Risk of accident

Dirty brake discs, brake drums and brake pads/linings can impair braking performance (up to the point of total failure). As a result, you could cause an accident. Carry out a brake test before driving on public roads to check the brake system for operating safety.

In the event of impaired braking, stop the vehicle and have the brake system checked and repaired at a qualified specialist workshop which has the necessary specialist knowledge and tools for the work required.

Mercedes-Benz recommends that you use a Mercedes-Benz Service Centre for this purpose. All work relevant to safety or on safety-related systems must be carried out at a qualified specialist workshop.
