Notes on changing bulbs

Bulbs and lights are essential for vehicle safety. You must therefore ensure that all bulbs are functioning at all times.

Bulbs have a limited service life.

Mercedes-Benz recommends, that when a dipped-beam headlamp or main-beam headlamp bulb fails that the corresponding bulb in the other headlamp is replaced at the same time. Mercedes-Benz recommends that you use Mercedes-Benz longlife bulbs for this purpose.

Risk of injury

Observe the following notes concerning the handling of bulbs:

  • Bulbs can become very hot. There is a risk of burns. You must therefore allow them to cool completely before changing them.

  • To avoid injuries, always wear non-slip gloves and safety goggles when replacing bulbs.

  • Do not use a bulb if it has been dropped or if its glass has been scratched. The bulb could explode. You could be injured by the shards of glass from a broken bulb.

  • Keep bulbs out of reach of children.

  • Only fit bulbs in enclosed lamps which have been designed for them and only use replacement bulbs of the same type and with the appropriate voltage.

  • Dirt on the glass bulb reduces the operating life of the bulb. Do not hold the glass bulb with your bare hands. If necessary, clean the glass bulb with alcohol or spirit while it is cold and wipe with a lint-free cloth.

  • Protect bulbs from moisture when in use and do not allow them to come into contact with liquids.

  • Where possible, only have defective bulbs changed at a qualified specialist workshop which has the necessary specialist knowledge and tools for the work required. Mercedes-Benz recommends that you use a Mercedes-Benz Service Centre for this purpose.

All work relevant to safety or on safety-related systems must be carried out at a qualified specialist workshop.

Replacing bulbs

Observe the following:

Switch off the lighting before replacing bulbs to prevent a short circuit.

Only touch new bulbs with a clean, lint-free cloth - never with wet or oily fingers.

Check contacts for corrosion and clean them if necessary.

Check that all seals are sitting correctly. Replace damaged seals.

If the new bulb still does not light up, consult a qualified specialist workshop, e.g. a Mercedes-Benz Service Centre.

Fuses

The fuse box is located in the electrical equipment compartment behind the driver's seat.

Risk of fire

Do not fit fuses with a higher amperage than specified. This would result in damage to the electrical system or even a fire in the electrical system.

Only use fuses of the specified amperage and do not bridge or repair fuses. Do not replace a fuse until the cause of the malfunction has been traced and rectified.

Locking screws

Loosen locking screws until the electrical equipment compartment cover can be removed.

Tilt the electrical equipment compartment cover upwards and remove it.

Checking and replacing

Spare fuses
Fuse extractor
LED
Test socket

The individual electrical circuits are protected by safety fuses or automatic circuit-breakers.

If an electrical circuit failure occurs, switch off electrical consumers and check the fuses.

A function test can be carried out on fuses by inserting them into test socket  in the fuse box.

Pull out the fuse from the module using fuse extractor and insert into test socket .

If LED lights up, the fuse is functional.

Replace the defective fuse with spare fuse .

Automatic circuit-breaker
Pin

Trigger
On

If the automatic circuit-breaker is triggered :

In the event of a circuit failure, switch off consumers and check the automatic circuit-breaker.

Check the automatic circuit-breaker:

Remove the automatic circuit-breaker from the module and press in pin to engage it .

Insert the automatic circuit-breaker into test socket .

If LED lights up, the automatic circuit-breaker is functional.

or

Press trigger .

If pin jumps to triggered position , the automatic circuit-breaker is functional.

Replace the faulty automatic circuit-breaker.

Switch on consumers and check that they function correctly.
